Lisa, my girlfriend, is a volunteer with an organization in Anchorage that deals with birds. They treat and release injured wild birds, but sometimes, injuries are so severe that these creatures can't be released. The birds that can't be released are then used as educational tools for the general public. This is Gaylan, a Great Horned Owl. He was found 13 years ago along the Hope highway. Its presumed that he was hit by a car, which broke his right wing so severely it had to be amputated. Lisa brings him out for presentations so us common folk can have a good look at these magnificent critters up close!

Great shot! It is so sad when a animal cannot be released back into the wild! Lucky this guy has people to take good care of him!
